Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef northeastern of Queensland. According to MSNBC. He was only 44-years-old.
"Irwin was shooting a new segment for his most recent series called "Ocean's Deadliest", when a stingrays tail sliced into him cutting his heart." Recalled his close friend John Stainton, who was also on Irwin's boat when it happened.
Crew members aboard the boat "Croc One" acted fast once they discovered what happened. The nearest emergency, city of Cairns, administered CPR while they rushed the boat to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead before ever arriving to the hospital.
“The world has unfortunately lost one of the greatest wildlife icons, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on Earth,” John Stainton making a statement to reporters in Carins. “He died doing his passion and left Earth peaceful and happy. He would have said, ’Crocs Rule!'”
