Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella has died.
The 54-year-old British filmmaker suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage at 5am on Tuesday (18.03.08).
He had been in hospital after undergoing an operation for cancer of the tonsils and neck at London's Charing Cross Hospital last week.
His agent Leslee Dart said: "The surgery had gone well and they were very optimistic. But he developed a haemorrhage and doctors were not able to stop it."
Minghella is survived by his Hong-Kong born choreographer wife Carolyn Choa, his daughter Hannah and actor son Max.
Minghella won a Best Director Oscar in 1997 for 'The English Patient', starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Kristin Scott Thomas.
His other work includes 'The Talented Mr. Ripley', which catapulted Jude Law to fame, and 'Cold Mountain' - which won Renée Zellweger a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
Minghella, who was born on the Isle of Wight, had recently finished filming 'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' in Botswana.
He worked as a TV script editor before making his directorial debut with made-for-TV production 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' in 1990. The romantic comedy, starring Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman, was so popular it was later released in cinemas.
He began his career in theatre, working as a playwright and director. He returned to the stage in 2005 for an interpretation of Puccini's 'Madam Butterfly' at the English National Opera.

"There was a report out of the U.K. that linked Charlie with 'Kristen' as part of a threesome where 'Kristen' was asked to be a cheerleader," a publicist for the actor told FOXNews.com. "Problem with the report was the alleged cheerleader incident, if it ever even happened, was 15 years ago. So the story is not true."
Pimp Jason Itzler, 41, claims he sent Ashley Alexander Dupre under the name of Victoria and another girl, Cheryl, to Sheen more than two years ago, the Daily Record reported.
He claims Sheen paid $20,000 for a threesome with the girls dressed up as cheerleaders.
"Sheen got the girls to dress up as cheerleaders and chant his name while performing sex acts. They loved Charlie. They said he was a great guy. A great lover. One time he had them dressed up like cheerleaders, chanting 'Charlie! Charlie! He's our man. If he can't do it, nobody can!'"
Itzler also claims Sheen pretended he was a porn film director and asked the women to act out lesbian scenes for him.
Sheen has admitted using hookers, but denied the story when it broke two years ago.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who played lovelorn New York journalist Carrie Bradshaw on the hit HBO show, is "Sex's" biggest post-show winner, reaping $25 million, according to an analysis by Portfolio magazine.
Deals with Garnier, Gap and Steve & Barry's have helped Parker buy as many Jimmy Choos as she wants.
"Sex" has also paid off big time for Kim Cattrall, who has parlayed her promiscuous Samantha Jones character into a $10 million bonanza.
Cattrall has been the cast's most prolific pitchwoman, pushing such diverse products as Liz Claiborne's Spark perfume, Bacardi low-cal rum, Tetley tea and Nissan cars.
Kristin Davis, who played proper society gal Charlotte York, has had the least sexy post-"Sex" career, landing in family-friendly roles in "The Shaggy Dog" and "Deck the Halls."
But playing the good girl has been profitable for Davis, who has made $4.5 million since the show ended in 2004, thanks in part to ads for Maybelline and Waterproof Garment Co.
The show's fourth female star, accomplished stage actress Cynthia Nixon, has stayed close to her creative roots by taking acclaimed roles in "Warm Springs" and "Tanner on Tanner."
But Nixon, who played career-driven lawyer Miranda Hobbes on "Sex," also was a popular pitchwoman for New York's FreshDirect. Her post-"Sex" bottom line is about $2.5 million.

Nicole Kidman has reportedly asked her pal George Clooney to be the godfather of her first child with husband Keith Urban.
The actress is due to give birth in June and has already decided that she wants Clooney to be the child’s godfather. The actor has reportedly agreed.
“Nicole asked George to be her baby’s godfather, and he has agreed,” says a source.
After Kidman announced her pregnancy, Clooney said she would be a “perfect mother.”
Kidman and Clooney became friends on the set of 1997 movie The Peacemaker.

Birkhead testified that in April 2006, Anna realized some of her Methadone was missing in her Studio City home. Birkhead said Anna had surveillance cameras in the house, checked them and found video proof that Daniel and his buddies were the culprits.
While Birkhead was under oath, he was asked about statements he made to the cops back in 2006, when he was at war with Anna. He had told police he saw Howard K. Stern smoke pot with Anna and Daniel. During his testimony, Birkhead said he was not completely clear on what he saw.
Birkhead also told cops Anna had given Daniel Ecstasy, but on the stand Birkhead said he couldn't say this actually happened.
Birkhead said Daniel's personality completely changed between January 2006 and May. He saw Daniel throw a TV through a window. Daniel often stayed out all night long and Anna was worried.
Also, Daniel was admitted to an L.A. hospital for misuse of valium in mid July, 2006.

The baby girl, who was born Sunday is the first for the Oscar winning actress and her model boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry.
A day after Nahla's birth, Aubry's sister, Eugenie, told PEOPLE, "It's been a long time since we've had a new baby in the family. It's very exciting."
Nahla means honeybee in Arabic, says Michael D. Cooperson, associate professor of Arabic at UCLA.
Berry, 41, tells Access Hollywood, "We didn't have a name picked out until just before we left the hospital."
"For us it was hard to name the most important person in our life until we met her," Berry adds.
