Shakira has announced that she will be building a school in Haiti to aid the country's recovery.

The 32-year-old star posted a statement on her website just days after she revealed she will be participating in the telethon Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief.

The Caribbean country was devastated by the earthquake that has killed tens of thousands of people and left many homeless.

The statement said that she will be setting up an initiative to build a new school through her Barefoot Foundation and it will work together with Architecture for Humanity and its NGO partners.

Shakira said: "There is a great need for immediate aid in Haiti, but also for longer-term reconstruction.

"For that reason, we are doing our small part to help Haiti rebuild and give the children affected by this disaster the chance to learn and thrive."
