The Oscar-winning actress will reprise the role of Galadriel the Lady of Lothlorien for the two upcoming Peter Jackson films.
"Cate is one of my favourite actors to work with, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films", said Jackson on Blanchett's return to the francise.
The first Hobbit movie is scheduled for release in 2012.

The singer plans to tell Simpson's story in Wallis, which would chart her love affair with English King Edward III, who gave up the throne to marry her.
Madonna is said to be lining up Blanchett for the lead role, while she is considering Dr Who star David Tennant to play Edward, according to The Sun.
A source tells the publication, "The final script is now written and the locations have been scouted. Madonna is now trying to assemble the cast and put the finances in place. The first scene is an old woman in her nineties living on her own in a Parisian flat (apartment), she starts to tell her life story to a housekeeper and it turns out the woman is Wallis Simpson. There will be a song for every decade of her life."

"If I had the choice between Cate Blanchett and me I'd go for Cate Blanchett," says the 27-year-old star. "Cate's ten years older than me, which is more suitable for the script."
She continues: "If they'd recast with Keira Knightley I'd have been heartbroken but they've gone for something different – and better in my opinion."

"I am utterly, deeply, humbled and chuffed by the fact that I'm a stamp. I'm going to be licked by millions of Australians and I can't wait." - Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett lends her hotness to the latest cover of Vanity Fair. In the article, she talks about how she tries to distance herself from Hollywood. She says that she doesn’t exist in that world, she merely observes it, and she feels this is made possible by husband Andrew Upton, who is “not with me because of that; I’m not a trophy. He likes the vessel, but he also wants to make sure the vessel is full.”
Speaking of husband Andrew:
“I thought, ‘Oh, god, he’s going to ask me to marry him – and I’m going to have to say yes!’ He didn’t, in fact; he asked me what I wanted for dinner or something like that. But I’d never had that thought before. I thought, This is extraordinary! I’ve never felt this before. What an adventure!”
Speaking of any future babies:
“Who knows? Don’t close those doors. The world is very overpopulated, but we do make nice ones. They all look like [my husband Andrew Upton]. To say he has dominant genes would be an understatement.”
Speaking of plastic surgery:
“Andrew said he’d divorce me if I did anything. When you’ve had children, your body changes; there’s history to it. I like the evolution of that history; I’m fortunate to be with somebody who likes the evolution of that history.”

The Oscar-winning actor and her new baby were both well, a spokesman said yesterday.
He said Blanchett and her husband, playwright Andrew Upton, "have a healthy baby boy -- Ignatius Martin Upton".
"All are well and happy," he added.

Commenting on her role, Blanchett revealed, 'Throughout my career, I have only accepted roles that I am passionate about, and my partnership with SK-II is no different. I truly believe I already played this role as an ambassador long before SK-II caught up with me.'
Blanchett also stars in the advertising campaign for the range, which can be seen in stores from this month. The stunning shots by photographer Michael Thompson focus on the actress's glowing skin, in a set of black and white portraits.
Cate's Essentials Kit goes on sale in Selfridges today, and will be available form selected department stores from 2 May.
