Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said he has been hoping Cher would return to a starring role on the big screen. Getting her for the film required the studio to find room in her busy schedule of touring and performing in Las Vegas, Variety reports.
"She brings a soulfulness and gravitas to this character that will ground the story," Culpepper said. "The only person who was more excited than I am is Christina."
Production will begin in November.

Cher is in secret talks to play a nightclub boss in Christina Aguilera's new movie Burlerque, according to new reports.
The Genie in A Bottle singer has signed on to play a burlesque dancer in her first big screen film, a musical about a small-town girl who lands a job dancing in a strip club while seeking fame and fortune in Los Angeles.
The project will be directed by actor/filmmaker Steve Antin, brother of choreographer Robin Antin, who founded the burlesque troupe-turned-girl band The Pussycat Dolls.
Eonline.com reports Cher is actively seeking the role of the club boss in the film.

Christina Aguilera was spotted arriving at the Osteria Mozza restaurant at Highlan Avenue in Los Angeles yesterday (May 10) for a night of dining out. The singer was dressed in casual jeans, a low-cut sleeveless top, and a vest, carrying a leather purse.
The Mozza is a favorite of Christina’s. She celebrated her 28th birthday at this restaurant last year, and she has even told the Los Angeles Times that the Mozza was her second favorite place to dine out in LA.

Christina Aguilera has signed on to make her live-action big screen debut in Steven Antin’s contemporary musical Burlesque for Screen Gems. Antin wrote the script, which was later revised by Erin Brockovich scribe Susannah Grant.
Christina Aguilera will play an ambitious smalltown girl with a big voice who tries to escape a hollow past by performing in a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles. The film hopes to be Moulin Rouge meets Cabaret, with established songs that will be updated and worked into dance numbers.
