The actress told US chatshow host Oprah Winfrey that she gave the money to the UN's World Food Programme.
The agency has launched a $3 billion global campaign to feed 59 million schoolchildren in developing countries for a year.
Drew Barrymore, a WFP ambassador, said: "I'm able to make this incredible donation - this has changed my life."

The Charlie's Angels star, who has been divorced twice, spoke about her new love life to Vogue magazine, revealing that her new boyfriend makes her so happy that her cheeks hurt.
And Juvonen told the magazine that Barrymore has finally found a good person. "I do feel she is finally with a good person. She is with someone who adores her and doesn't put her down on any level...And that is such a departure,"Contactmusic quoted Juvonen, as saying.
Drew Barrymore divorced bar owner Jeremy Thomas just after five weeks of marriage, and split with comedian Tom Green after five months.

According to the Associated Press, Reese earns any where between between $15 million to $20 million a movie, awarding her first place on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the highest-paid actresses.

The Music and Lyrics actress received the honour after filming a documentary for the international organisation.
She recently visited the UN's school feeding project in Kenya.
She said:
"Filming this documentary has changed my life. It enlightened me and I started learning from the very children that we were filming about what is important in life and what the priorities should be.
"The priorities for these children are to have one meal a day and to be educated and most of these children take half their food home to their families to share it with them."
