Hewitt, 29, and the Scottish actor--who stars in the USA drama Crash, became engaged in Nov., 2007 after two years together.
"They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement," says a source close to the couple. "They're both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them."
Reps for both Hewitt and McCall had no immediate comment.

Other than that, her dress was great, her style choices were spot-on, but we just can’t figure out what was going through her - or her stylist’s - head when they decided on that look.
After the dramatic scene that totally looked like a nasty “I’m leaving you” breakup, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ross McCall were seen together like nothing ever happened. They probably want to show they are still together, they still love each other and a breakup was not the reason to postpone their wedding.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is showing off her slimmed-down figure after losing 18 pounds in 10 weeks.
"I am in a pretty good workout regimen that I like, so it inspired me to keep it up," the "Ghost Whisperer" actress, 29, tells Us Weekly. "The energy level and the way I feel now is great."
In December of last year, an angry Hewitt defended her curves after photos of her in a bikini were ridiculed on the Internet.
But Hewitt says that's not why she shaped up.
"She told me, 'They said some rude, mean things, but that's not why I wanted to change,'" trainer Stevie Sant'Angelo told the magazine.
Several Web sites posted shots of Hewitt, with a bit of cellulite, on a Hawaii beach with her then brand-new fiance, Scottish actor Ross McCall, along with some less-than-complimentary comments. TMZ.com, for example, said, "We know what you ate this summer, Love — everything!"
Hewitt responded on her Web site: "To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini — put it on and stay strong."

She portrays the role as Melinda Gordon who has the ability to see and communicate with the dead. The show begins its fourth season consisting of 24 series on October 3, 2008.
The Texas born star has featured each year on FHM's 100 Sexiest Women In The World since 1997. She was ranked #20 in Maxim's Hot 100 list (2008).

Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has vowed to avoid get married in the summer as she doesn't want to be "a sweaty bride".
The Ghost Whisperer star got engaged to Scottish actor Ross McCall in November (07), with plans afoot for their forthcoming wedding day.
But although the couple has failed to decide on a date, Love Hewitt knows exactly when she doesn't want to get married.
He tells People.com, "It won't be a summer wedding. I won't be a sweaty bride.
"We are still planning the wedding and haven't set a date yet. But it'll still be small and intimate. (We are waiting for our schedules) to simmer down a bit too."

Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has been forced to limp around wearing a supportive boot, after spraining her ankle shooting TV show Ghost Whisperer.
The star had to be helped onstage on Craig Ferguson's U.S. talk show on Thursday, and showed off a heavy-duty plastic boot that she can inflate to support her painful limb.
Love-Hewitt said of the accident, "I was chasing after a ghost and the ghost won."
The actress will be out of action for 10 days while her ankle heals.

'Ghost Whisperer' star Jennifer Love Hewitt has denied that she is pregnant after media reports suggested that she had a baby bump.
Rumours about the star began to circulate after she was photographed wearing a number of loose-fitting dresses, most recently at the Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles.
However, the star's representative has denied the reports, saying: "She is not pregnant."
