Robert Pattinson described the Twilight craze as a "virus" as he attended the UK fan party of the franchise's second film.
The British actor joined co-stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner at the event for New Moon in London's Battersea Park to the sound of thousands of screaming fans - many of whom had been queuing to get into the venue since early this morning - and the trio insisted they were surprised at the response.
After signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans, Robert - who stars in the films as vampire Edward Cullen - said: "We went to Japan earlier on in the year. There wasn't that much of a reaction - but last week when we went again, it suddenly exploded, the same as here," Robert explained. "I don't know how, it just explodes so quickly. It takes seven months to take hold - it's like a virus."
Taylor, who was also greeted by howls in reference to his character Jacob Black morphing into a werewolf, said he was surprised by the fans' reaction in the capital.
He said: "I'm stunned - I knew it was going to be good, but this is amazing. The fans in London are surprising me... it's amazing to know we have this support behind us. It makes us feel like we're at home."
Kristen, who plays high school student Bella Swan in the film, said: "It's really exciting. I used to not know what to do with myself, but now I can actually enjoy it."
New Moon is released in UK cinemas on November 20.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon bonanza continues as the latest magazine to use its stars for the cover is Harper's Bazaar. The December 2009 issue features Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in photos that will delight fans of the Twilight Saga as well as focus on the "are they or aren't they?" rumor that the two are an item.
The next morning, they shared breakfast together from Noah's Bagels (a plain bagel with walnut cream cheese for him; a blueberry with butter for her).
Around 8:30 a.m., they were taken directly to Hollywood's Deluxe Laboratories for a screening of New Moon.
"Rob wanted a cigarette so he went outside with Kristen for about 15 minutes," the source tells Us. "They were hugging, as Rob was smoking his cigarette and then he leaned down and kissed her on the lips. He had his arm around her almost the whole time."

According to US magazine OK!, Kristen Stewart called a day on the affair because Robert Pattinson was getting too serious.
A source told the magazine "Rob was talking marriage. She told him they need to take a break."
The article also claimed that the prospect of spending long periods of time apart after the filming of Eclipse ended also contributed to their demise.

The rumored couple — who are currently in Canada filming the third Twilight movie, Eclipse — have rented out several rooms at the hotel at a cost of $850 a suite each night.
“They have two rooms joined by a door,” a source told the UK’s More magazine. “They use a third suite on the floor to listen to music or watch Blu-ray movies on a large, flat screen, when they stay in after a day’s shooting or on weekends.”

While neither Pattinson or Stewart have confirmed reports they're romantically involved, it is widely believed that they are, in fact, a couple.
"Robert and I are great friends but I understand why you would assume that, when we lean on each other for support, there must be something more," Stewart, 19, is quoted as saying.
"And I'm not criticizing anyone for thinking it either. If anything, they’re really perceptive because they can see a closeness."

The Twilight stars, who have consistently denied any romance between them, were spotted cuddling up at a Kings Of Leon gig in Vancouver, Canada, surrounded by other members of the vampire film's cast.
In one photo the two actors are seen nose to nose as they lean into each other.
A source told Us Weekly: "They've decided to be more public about going out now - they're not boyfriend and girlfriend, but they've definitely hooked up."
The sequel to Twilight, New Moon, is due out in November this year.

But why?
According to his Twilight and New Moon costar Nikki Reed, Pattinson gets the girls — and the guys! — swooning because he's very feminine.
"Rob is sort of feminine looking and I think young girls like boys that look like women," Reed told People magazine when asked why she thinks Rob has such a dedicated following.

Pattinson had been inside most of the morning filming scenes for his new movie Remember Me.
A team of five security guards were trying to fend off a crowd of teenaged girls when Rob was leaving the bookstore.
It was pouring rain as they tried to hustle him quickly across the busy street to the safety of his trailer.
Some of the teen girls were hysterical and Rob rushed across the road. As he did so, a taxi grazed him. The cabbie slammed on his brakes as soon as he realized what had happened.
It appeared as if the cab hit Rob in the hip. He stood there for a moment looking stunned. The bodyguard next to him checked if he was okay and then screamed at the fans: "You see what you did, you almost killed him!"
