Matthew McConaughey had been up for the role, but Armstrong let is slip during a chat on ESPN that Gyllenhaal had won the role.

Armstrong, McConaughey and Gyllenhaal have all been spotted together regulary over the summer either bike riding or out on the town.

An ESPN source told the New York Post: "Lance said that's why he has been spending so much time with them both this summer."
